Scarlet Monkeyflower (Erythranthe cardinalis) has a wide native range spanning from British Columbia and Alberta, south to California and also parts of Nevada, Idaho, and Montana. Scarlet Monkeyflower is commonly found in moist habitats such as wet meadows, stream banks, marshes, and along the edges of lakes and ponds. The tubular-shaped flowers, borne in clusters on slender stems, provide a stunning burst of color to the landscape.

Like many of its close relatives, Scarlet Monkeyflower has a long, prolific bloom season from late spring through summer if provided ample water and filtered light, with the height of flowering occurring from June to August. Although occasionally visited by the odd bumblebee, the flowers are adapted for pollination by hummingbirds, who are highly covetous of blooming plants. Hummingbirds will establish their territories around healthy nectar supplies and pattern their movements on the time flowers require to refill nectar reserves, returning to feed (or fight for the right to feed) at regular intervals in a behavior known as “trap-lining”. The plant’s lush, low growth habit also provides habitat and cover for small birds, mammals, and amphibians.

The plant's ability to thrive in moist, shady environments makes it ideal for urban rain gardens and water features, where it can help with water filtration, provide habitat, and suppress weeds. It tolerates a wide range of soil types, including clay, loam, and sand, but prefers soils rich in organic matter. To germinate the seeds, surface sow on a moist seed-starting mix. Only the tiniest amount of the dust-like seed is needed per cell, pot, or patch. Very lightly press seeds in or sprinkle with sand if runoff is a concern, and gently water incorporate into the soil. Keep the soil consistently moist, and germination typically occurs within a few weeks. Seedlings need to be fully protected from full sun and dryness until mature.
