Ookow (Dichelostemma congestum) has a broad native range, encompassing regions from British Columbia to California and Arizona. Ookow is typically found in a variety of habitats, including grasslands, open woodlands, and meadows. En masse, the flowers create a unique visual display (rising after much of the foliage has already senesced) with clusters of vibrant flowers that range in color from deep pink to purple, held atop tall and slender stems that are surprisingly strong.

The blooming period for Ookow typically occurs in late spring to early summer. The prolonged bloom season of Ookow provides a valuable nectar source for pollinators, especially native bees and butterflies, which serve as its primary pollinators. The bell-shaped flowers of Ookow provide a convenient landing platform and abundant nectar. While not a major food source, Ookow may provide some forage for browsing animals such as deer and elk. However, it is not often preferred due to its unpalatable nature, allowing the plant to persist and reproduce in its native habitats. Some songbirds, on the other hand, may be quite fond of the seeds. The bulbs of Ookow were consumed by west coast Native peoples after proper processing, providing a starchy food source.

Ookow prefers drier, well-drained soils and thrives in a wide range of soil types, including loamy, sandy, and rocky. Seeds can be surface sown in bulbs trays or in place from fall to late winter, and covered with sand or fine soil. Plants in their 2nd year and older require dry dormancy through summer and should only be watered once or twice per month until fall rains return. Seedlings are small, singular, grass-like leaves that require 3-4 years to reach blooming maturity.  With proper conditions and care, Ookow will establish itself and form perennial clumps, continuing to bloom and grace the landscape for years to come.
