Broad-leaved Shooting Star or Henderson’s Shooting Star (Dodecatheon hendersonii is an ephemeral perennial found in western North America. Its native range spans from California to British Columbia, with populations also occurring in parts of Nevada and Idaho. Broad-leaved Shooting Star typically inhabits moist meadows, open woodlands, and along seasonal streambanks, favoring areas with adequate moisture during its growing season. The unique flowers, which resemble shooting stars with their backward-pointing petals, range in color from pale pink to deep magenta. The basal rosette of spoon-shaped leaves provides an attractive textural contrast, even when the plant is not in bloom.
Plants typically bloom from late spring to early summer, with peak bloom occurring from April to June. Shooting Stars have a strong relationship with bumblebees, with the flowers and downward orientation being well-suited for the long-tongued bumblebees. Other pollinators, such as butterflies and hummingbirds, may also visit the flowers, contributing to cross-pollination.
The plant's preference for seasonally moist habitats makes it ideal for open woodlands, meadows, and xeriscapes. Broad-leaved Shooting Star is an ephemeral perennial, meaning that it emerges from the ground, blooms, and sets seed within a relatively short period. After flowering, the plant quickly withers and goes dormant until the following year, relying on stored energy reserves in its underground structures. This adaptation allows Few-flowered Shooting Star to take advantage of early spring moisture and avoid competition with other plants that emerge later in the season.
Shooting Stars thrive in seasonally moist, well-drained soils that are equally rich in organic and mineral matter. For successful germination, it is recommended to sow fresh seeds immediately, as they have limited viability. Seeds should be surface sown in the fall and very lightly covered with sand or fine soil for adequate cold stratification. Soils should be kept relatively dry during the summer once the leaves begin to wither, and watered at most twice a month until fall rain returns.
